Netflix’s new documentary Chaos: The Manson Murders untangles a web of conspiracy involving the CIA, LSD, Jack Ruby, the Manson Family. Here, we revisit the tragic murders of the famous 60s actress, her friends, and innocent grocers.
Charles Manson was the proclaimed leader of the Manson Family—a group defined as a cult. The family was responsible for the violent murders of seven people (including an unborn child) in Los Angeles in “two nights of mayhem” in August 1969.
Things among the family became violent when Manson announced it was time for “Helter Skelter”, what he deemed to be an inevitable race war after which he and his followers would take control of the United States. “Helter Skelter” comes from the Beatle’s White Album song of the same name.
Family members Linda Kasabian, Charles ‘Tex’ Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel targeted the Hollywood family of Sharon Tate, who was eight months’ pregnant at the time. According to Watson, Manson instructed him to “totally destroy” everyone inside the house and do it “as gruesome as you can”. They fatally stabbed and tortured seven people in total: a celebrity hairstylist named Jay Sebring; coffee fortune heiress Abigail Folger; writer Wojciech Frykowski; and Steven Parent, a friend of the family’s caretaker. The day after, the bodies of Rosemary and Leno LaBianca were found in a nearby neighborhood.
The five perpetrators – Atkins, Krenwinkel, Manson, Van Houten, and Watson – were each tried and convicted for their roles. They received the death penalty, but the ruling was overturned in 1972, deeming the law as unconstutional. They were later commuted to life in prison. Manson died in prison on November 19, 2017 from cardiac arrest.
