We’re at the start of fall, which means we’re well into it for fall fashion. We’ve just finished fashion week for spring/summer 2025, but thankfully, the fall shows happened back in February so we’ve had time to collect ourselves. If you’re already craving sweater weather, you are right on time. The menswear shows earlier in the year, as well as the ones that just happened in June had a gorgeous show of knitwear.

This fall, the sweaters we’re seeing are very fun. There’s big focus on color, exaggeration, and graphics. A basic sweater will literally never do you wrong, but the trends are really pointing toward fun knitwear. So, one philosophy you’d be safe to follow: go crazy.

Fall is one of those tragic treats because it is with us for such a short time each year, but the fashion rocks so hard. A lot is happening right now in style that is influencing attitudes about fashion. Some of the best minds in New York’s fashion scene are on Substack and TikTok. HF Twitter (High Fashion Twitter) is a real real thing. Say what you will about Dimes Square, but it is more informative than a fashion magazine.

The voices on the street are saying that fashion needs to speak to real life. It can’t be this insular thing that only speaks to itself. Right now, we’re seeing so much leak into knitwear trends. Firstly, in the last several years, hand crocheting and knitting has become very popular amongst hobbyist at a volume we haven’t seen since our grandparents’ generation. Second, there has been a lot of media that has been influencing clothes, which we hadn’t seen since TikTok became popular. For a while, TikTok was kind of impossible for film and TV costume departments to race against—but now, it’s gained its power back.

Challengers has brought the country club preppy look that was beginning to rise very slowly the last couple summers. Tenniswear is everywhere. Similarly Charli xcx’s Brat has obviously spurred clubwear to the front of style, but it’s also added a sense of humor to it.

We’re seeing literature, F1, emo, prep all color the trends of fall 2024, so of course it touches knitwear too. Keep scrolling to get some inspo.
