Mondays are no fun—unless it’s the first Monday in May, a.k.a. the Met Gala. Once a year, celebrities, style insiders, and trailblazers in the world of art, sports, and beyond come together for one purpose: fashion. They gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to raise funds for the Costume Institute while also celebrating the start of its annual fashion exhibition. The themes grow more profound by the year, educating us about different cultures, influences, experiences, and stories, which are put on display at the ball via dazzling gowns, dapper suits, and accessories dreams are made of. And it’s safe to say, the 2025 soirée will be no different.
With the big night just a few months away, both the Met and Vogue have unveiled the theme and dress code for the evening: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and “Tailored for You.” According to the Met Museum, the theme—which is also the name of the accompanying exhibition—is a “historical examination” of Black style from the 18th century “through an exploration of the concept of dandyism.” Dandyism is a style of dress that prioritizes elegance and individuality. Following the abolishment of slavery, Black people used dandyism as a form of expression and a method to establish themselves in high society. The exhibition will deep dive into the aesthetic through garments, paintings, prints, photographs, film, and literary text, the Met explained.
As for dress code, “Tailored for You” emphasizes suiting and menswear, which will be heavily explored in the exhibition. We can expect to see immaculate tailoring, decadent blazers and eye-catching trousers considering this year’s co-chairs include Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, ASAP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams. Vogue’s longstanding editor in chief Anna Wintour will also serve as chair and LeBron James has been named an honorary co-chair.

Fashion’s biggest night is set to take place on Monday, May 5, in New York City. The ball will celebrate the start of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition.
The 2025 Met Gala theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which honors the Costume Institute’s exhibition of the same name. The exhibition will serve as a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present. According to the Met, various authors and designers have contributed garments, art, and sculptures to bring it to life. “The theme this year is not only timely but also speaks to our rich culture that should always be widely celebrated,” Usher said.
The dress code, “Tailored for You,” meanwhile, emphasizes a component of the theme: menswear and suiting.
Anna Wintour is tasked with choosing the co-chairs for the gala. The group is responsible for promoting the ball and the newest exhibition. This year, Wintour selected ASAP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and Colman Domingo.
Rocky, a rapper who has attended countless Mets, is known for blending high fashion with streetwear, influencing major high-end brands and trends. Williams, for his part, is a music pioneer and the creative director of menswear at Louis Vuitton. Hamilton, a race car driver, has been recognized for years for his experimental and bold style. Similarly, Domingo—an actor known for Fear the Walking Dead, Euphoria, and Rustin—never misses an opportunity to kill it on the red carpet. He gravitates towards attention-grabbing looks like capes, brooches, and wide-leg pants.
While Anna Wintour doesn’t reveal who she has invited, we can expect a plethora of A-listers to hit the iconic Met steps. In the past, guests have included Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively, Lady Gaga, Zendaya, and Lana del Rey. In addition to the Met’s vets, we can confirm a number of newcomers. Alongside the co-chairs is the host committee comprised of actors, artists, athletes, designers, and more. This year’s group features Doechii and Sha’Carri Richardson—who have not yet made their gala debut. Other committee members include Angel Reese, Ayo Edebiri, Regina King, Simone Biles, Janelle Monáe, Tyla, Usher, and Olivier Rousteing.
At the ball, guests will get to tour the exhibition and sip on cocktails. Afterward, there’s a dinner and performances. Past performers include Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Madonna, The Weeknd, and Lizzo.
Curious fashion lovers can watch celebrities arrive and pose on the red carpet via Vogue.com and Live from E! on the big night. The inside of the event will not be televised.
