It’s that time again! When editors, influencers, and fashion buyers flock to random NYC warehouses and churches to see models walk down the runway in clothes that won’t be produced until a year later. It’s currently New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 so at least we get to see fashion and beauty trends we try now while it’s still warm.
These spring collections seem a bit more fun and colorful than usual, which is a fresh departure from the obvious “florals for spring.” When it comes to beauty, balletcore still dominates with intricate buns, pink bows everywhere, and slicked-back styles. Eye makeup is creative with pops of color and graphic eyeliner — both trends you can try right now. There’s no need to wait!
Nails are all over the place in terms of color but ballet pink still takes the top spot. Nail artists are having fun with the pink shades with chrome toppers and even little crystals. Let’s get to the looks, shall we? Save this post for inspo all year round.
At Alice & Olivia, lead hair stylist Matthew Curtis and Sola Salons Beauty Professionals created pearl and crystal encrusted buns, ’60s-style twists, and ribbon-adorned updos that felt right out of Black Swan. Curtis used Living Proof products to get the looks, including Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray ($36 at Ulta Beauty) and No Frizz Smooth Styling Serum ($36 at Ulta Beauty).
These aren’t Euphoria face gems (though, those are fun, too). The crystal adornments at the Sandy Liang show were much more casual and low-key. Jocelyn Biga did the glam with Estée Lauder skincare and makeup — plus those adorable gems around the models’ eyes. They even trickled down to the fingernails. Manicurist Holly Falcone created the nail looks for the show using Kiki World’s Pretty Nail Graffiti in the shade Pearl ($29 at Kiki) with crystals of carrying sizes secured with glue.
Listen up millennials: the comb headbands of the ’90s and early 2000s are back. At Helmut Lang, hairstylist Jawara took inspiration from the Helmut Lang show in the ’90s and modernized it. That means, models rocked slicked-back styles, spiked knot-buns, and those headband combs we all remember fondly. He used Bumble and bumble products to get the look, including Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer ($34 at Sephora) for a smooth blow dry with Dyson hair tools. Those include the Supersonic Hair Dryer ($429.99 at Ulta Beauty) and Paddle Brush ($39.99 at Dyson).
The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung slayed fashion week wearing the hottest fashion trends and proving she can pull off the type of makeup Belly could only dream of. The soft goth/grunge trend was all over the runways so it only makes sense the actress would try it out, here at the Coach Spring 2024 runway show and dinner afterparty.
Makeup artist Misha Shahzada used OLEHENRIKSEN skincare and KVD Beauty makeup to achieve glowing skin and grungy glam. “Since Lola’s dress has some sparkle, I wanted to play up her skin with some extra hydration and dewiness. This helps compliment the beautiful sequin in her dress!” Shahzada told StyleCaster. That included OLEHENRIKSEN Strength Trainer Peptide Boost Moisturizer ($51 at Sephora) with a small drop of the HydraBarrier Nourishing Face Oil ($58 at Sephora) “pressed into her skin” pre-makeup. “Skincare to me, is the preferred foundation, and since we took the time on prepping the skin, these products added a beautiful glow and luminosity to Lola’s overall look,” adds Shahzada.
For her bold eye makeup, Shahzada used KVD Beauty Dazzle Long-Wear Eyeshadow Stick ($24 at Sephora) in shade Hail Surge to Tung entire eyelid and pressed it in. Then, she traced the lash line using the KVD Beauty Tattoo Pencil Liner ($23 at Sephora) in shade Tigereye Brown to create a graphic flick. For added depth, she went over the Tigereye Brown with the Tattoo Pencil Liner in shade Trooper Black to the lash line, as well as Tung’s lower waterline. She finished with the new KVD Beauty Full Sleeve Long + Defined Tubing Mascara. Obsessed.
Chrome is currently a big nail trend and that look isn’t going anywhere. At the Mirror Palais show, manicurist Julie Kandalec gave each model pink press-on nails made with CND shellac in Quartz Correct, Soft Peony, and Sweet Cider with a light layer of chrome on top.
At Christian Siriano, manicurist Julie Kandalec designed the nail look using Essie Gel-Couture in Polished & Poised and Birthday Girl ($9.61 each at Amazon ) to give the models a classic pink manicure with a subtle chrome finish.
Have some fun with your eyeliner this spring. It’s anything but basic. At Eckhaus Latta, makeup artist Daniel Sallstrom painted shapes around the models’ eyes using M.A.C. eyeliner. He chose to forgo complexion products, opting to use Sunday Riley’s skin prep as a base for the dramatic eye looks, including C.E.O. Afterglow Brightening Vitamin C Gel Cream ($65 at Sephora).
At Khaite, Diane Kendal used Nars eyeliner to draw graphic lines on models’ faces for a touch of something extra.
Graphic eyeliner not your thing? Have some fun with pops of color on the eyelids instead! At Mansur Gavriel, Kanako Takase, Global Creative Director of Japanese beauty brand Addiction Tokyo, gave models natural face makeup with pops of yellow, green, and pink color across the lids. He used all Addiction Tokyo’s new-to-the-U.S. products, including The Eyeshadow Matte ($20 at Addiction Tokyo) in shades 013M Sakura Petal, 024M Dark Saffron, and 016M 1970.
