You might think being married to the Queen of England would make you the richest person around, but Prince Philip’s relationship with money was actually pretty interesting. When he passed away in 2021, just shy of his 100th birthday, a lot of people wondered what would happen to his estate. Born in 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu, Philip didn’t exactly have the cushiest start in life. Despite being born a prince, his family had to flee Greece during a period of political upheaval when he was just a baby. He bounced around Europe for a while, eventually landing in Britain where he attended school at Gordonstoun in Scotland—the same place where he would later send his future son, Charles.

Philip’s connection to the British royal family began through his maternal grandmother, who maintained close ties to the British crown. However, it was his fateful meeting with Princess Elizabeth, his third cousin through Queen Victoria, that would change the course of his life—and British history—forever. Their love story began when Elizabeth was just 13, and Philip, then a naval cadet, was 18. They started writing letters to each other, and the rest, as they say, is history. The pair tied the knot in 1947 at Westminster Abbey, and over the years, they welcomed four children: Prince Charles (now king,) Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

For 73 years, Philip stood by Elizabeth’s side, becoming the longest-serving royal consort in British history. He was known for his quick wit, occasional gaffes, and unwavering support of his wife and the Crown. The late prince consort passed away at Windsor Castle at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021, just two months shy of his 100th birthday.
