Red carpet trends are a lot like runway trends, since stylists often pull the most current gowns of the season. But sometimes it’s a coincidence when stars gravitate to a certain color gown or hairstyle. To wit, the red carpet trends of 2024 are already pretty glaring—with red gowns, dramatic cutouts, and sequins dominating awards shows so far.
It’s just the beginning of the award season, so we’re going to see more and more red carpet trends emerging across style and beauty. So far, we’re excited about the red gowns and floral appliqués that stunned at the Golden Globes—and the dramatic cutouts that dominated the 2024 Grammys. When it come to beauty, we’re obsessing over side parts, bobs, and glowy skin. Just look at Greta Lee, who hits every trend, and Jennifer Lawrence, whose side part is bringing us back to 2016 in the best way.

Corset gowns had a moment at the 2024 Grammys red carpet. Tons of celebs—like Laverne Cox, Victoria Monét, Taylor Swift, and more—sported the snatched look. And Doja Cat offered a snarky corporate secretary take on the trend by pairing her gown with tiny prescription opticals.
Laverne Cox and Kylie Minogue both opted for corset-style dresses in fiery red shades. Laverne, who hosted E’s Grammy red carpet pre-show, stunned in a two-tone red corset dress that featured PVC and dramatic hips. Kylie (who won her first Grammy for Best Pop Dance Recording for “Padam Padam”) chose a red Dolce & Gabbana gown that had a stunning braided corset.
Victoria Monét’s brown satin corset gown looked luscious on her glowy skin—and she also twinned with her two-year-old daughter Hazel.
Velvet was a fan-favorite fabric at the 2024 Grammys—with everyone from Taylor Swift to Miley Cyrus sporting the plush material. While we loved Tay’s black velvet opera gloves, we found Miley’s mustard velvet heels even more eye-catching, as they made the perfect complement to her statement-making naked dress.
Chrissy Teigen hit the Grammys red carpet in a mini dress with a black velvet bodice. The bottom of the dress added tons of drama, thanks to a pink oversized rosette.
Lana Del Rey’s knee-length black dress gave total coquette vibes. The drop-waist dress had an ’80s silhouette and was adorned with velvet flowers.
Chokers stole the show at the 2024 Grammys. Taylor Swift’s clock choker—which might allude to the release date of Reputation (Taylor’s Version)—was one of many that appeared on the Grammys red carpet.
Ice Spice rocked a gold chain choker with an oversized cross. The necklace completed her Baby Phat denim look that brought all the Y2K vibes.
Janelle Monae accessorized her black strapless gown with a black choker encrusted with diamonds. It paired perfectly with her sleek Giorgio Armani Privé gown, which she noted made her feel “classic, timeless, futuristic”.
While elegant evening gowns are a red carpet go-to, dramatic cutouts took over at the 2024 Grammys. Tyla stunned in a seafoam green evening gown lined with massive cutouts and sequin panels.
Paris Jackson delivered one of the boldest looks on the Grammys red carpet. While striking cutouts made her black evening gown feel contemporary, the makeup hiding her 80+ tattoos stole the show.
Kat Graham’s Grammys look was sheer drama. She wore a white evening gown with a huge center cutout, a statement-making neckline, and a dramatic cape.
Red was the color of the night, a bit unexpected in the year of Barbie. Still, it’s season-appropriate, eye-catching, and there’s sure to be a shade that looks good on everyone. Take Ayo Edebiri’s candy apple red Prada gown, for example. She’s never looked better.
Florence Pugh combined two major trends, floral appliqués and red all in one Valentino gown.
Another favorite red dress of the evening came from Danielle Brooks in Custom Moschino. She took a break from The Color Purple‘s signature color to shine in this royal hue.
Listen up millennials: it’s our moment. The side part is back and bigger than ever. Take Jennifer Lawrence’s smooth blowout. Hairstylist Gregory Russell could have easily gone for a middle part here but the deep side part has a flirtiness you could tell Lawrence was feeling on the Golden Globes red carpet.
There were tons of slicked-back hairstyles at the Golden Globes but Elle Fanning’s was one of our favorites. Hairstylist Jenda Alcorn chose to go with a chic side part instead of the TikTok-trending middle style. “The vintage Balmain dress Elle is wearing has such an aura of classic glamour, but with such ease and freshness,” she said in a statement. “We wanted the hair to have the same light easy quality but with a nod to couture construction with the knot in the back.”
Alcorn used all L’Oreal Paris products, including L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray Unscented ($12.99 at Amazon ) because it “it blocks any humidity and I can layer it on without getting any crunch or residue,” she adds.
Bobs were also a big trend of the evening and Greta Lee stunned with hers in a wavy side part. Hairstylist Jenny Cho’s inspiration behind the hair was “hair that makes you feel like you’re living in Old Hollywood.” She used Olivia Garden brushes and tools to complete the look, including the Titanium + Ion 1” Professional Curling Iron ($99.99 at Ulta Beauty) to create the old Hollywood waves.
Say goodbye to bows and hello to florals! We love how huge the floral appliqué trend was in such different ways. To wit, Emma Stone’s glittery gold Louis Vuitton dress had roses and flowers that look embroidered on.
We can’t talk about 3D florals without mentioning Jennifer Lopez’s pink Nicole + Felicia Couture gown. The strapless dress features oversized rose-adorned sleeves and a dramatic back-train.
The unexpected black flowers down the front of Selena Gomez’s red (!) Custom Armani Privé gown make it more festive and award show-ready.
For red carpet skin that looks radiant and glowy even in 50 degree winds, it’s all about skin prep. For Greta Gerwig, makeup artist Molly R. Stern used Le Domaine Skincare. “I wanted Greta’s look to feel super modern with quenched, radiant skin,” Stern said in a statement. “Greta has such a naturally cool beauty that I didn’t want anything to distract from that. I spent a lot of time stimulating her skin, getting her natural blood flowing to the surface.”
That included Le Domaine The Serum ($229.90 at Amazon ) to smooth the skin and Le Domaine The Fluid Cream ($242 at Amazon ) massaged it into the skin using Jillian Demspey’s Gold Bar ($195 at Sephora) to “stimulate and intensely moisturize Greta’s complexion.”
Stern finished Gerwig’s glam with Pat McGrath Lab makeup.
While Ali Wong was up on stage winning Best Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture for TV for her role in Beef, I couldn’t help but think how gorgeous her skin looked. That’s thanks to makeup artist and Tatcha Global Director of Artistry, Daniel Martin. He used Tatcha skincare to prep Wong’s skin, including The Texture Tonic ($62 at Sephora) to gently exfoliate, The Water Cream ($72 at Sephora) for hydration, and The Liquid Silk Canvas ($54 at Sephora) to ensure her makeup stayed in place.
Speaking of makeup, Martin used Chanel Beauty to complete her glam.
Elizabeth Olsen’s red lip might be the first thing you noticed but we couldn’t help but drool over her radiant skin. Well, it turns out Olsen went to the gym pre-Golden Globes — but not the regular gym! She, Julia Garner, Abby Elliott, and Hannah Waddingham all hit up FaceGym’s Los Angeles studio before the big day. They got “facial workouts” like the Cryo Contour and the Signature Sculpt.
Makeup Artist Mary Wiles continued the “workouts” during day-of skin prep. “I went in with the FaceGym Weighted Ball for a gentle massage to help increase blood flow for radiant glowing skin,” she said. “I followed with the Pure Lift device focusing on the jawline and cheekbones….To finish, I worked over the facial contours with the Multi-Sculpt to depuff and drain any remaining facial tension and enhance definition for the perfect red carpet sculpt.”
