Ever since it was announced that Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him was officially hitting the big screen, #BookTok has been all atwitter with their casting ideas. But we have our own thoughts on who should step into the roles of characters, like Kenna and Ledger.

On October 7, 2024, Deadline reported that Universal had acquired the rights to the New York Times bestselling 2022 novel Reminders of Him, and slated the film’s release for February 13, 2026. Though no director has been tied to the project yet, Hoover wrote the screenplay and will be producing alongside Lauren Levine through their own Heartbones Entertainment. It Ends With Us—Hoover’s first adaptation, which earned a whopping $344.5M—was written and produced by Christy Hall, making Reminders of Him the first time Hoover will be taking the reins.
On the news, Hoover shared, “I am thrilled to be working with Universal to bring Kenna Rowan’s world to life. I hear from many readers who tell me they found something of themselves in her story of living with and through tragedy, and doing the often messy and imperfect work of healing and turning the page to a fresh chapter in life. I am excited as Reminders of Him holds a special place in my heart too.”
Deadline reported that Maika Moore is starring in the lead role of Kenna Rowan.
Rudy Pankow was confirmed by Deadline to be starring in the Reminders of Him adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Tyriq Withers would be starring in Reminders of Him.
The main protagonist of Reminders of Him, Kenna Rowan is a 26-year-old woman who, after serving out her five-year prison sentence, returns to the town where she made a fatal mistake to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. Suffering from grief, guilt, and trauma, she struggles to put the pieces of her life back together and become the mother she never had. Kenna is described as having a face like “a work of art,” green eyes, and russet hair that “falls right below her chin.”
Most fans have envisioned Josephine Langford or Zoey Deutch in this role, but we think The Originals star Phoebe Tonkin would knock it out of the park. She recently starred in the Netflix adaptation of Boy Swallows Universe where she played a mom who comes from a traumatic upbringing and lands in prison after struggling with drug addiction. In a January interview with WWD, Phoebe described the character as someone who’s “just doing the best with what she has. She doesn’t always get it right, but she does love her children so much.”
Ledger Ward is one of everyone’s favorite book boyfriends and with good reason. An NFL player for the Broncos-turned-bar owner, the 28-year-old is good-looking, has “fluid…long, dark strands that hang in his eyes,” “eyes that have seen a thing or two,” and “tattoos that slide all the way into his shirtsleeves.” All that to say, he’s pretty hot. There are a slew of Hollywood actors who could step up to the plate, but Nick Robinson is our dark horse pick.
In 2021, he starred in Netflix’s Maid, portraying an abusive ex-boyfriend and father to a little girl. While that’s definitely a darker role, his experience playing a parent paired with his sweeter side shown in Everything, Everything and Love, Simon feels like the perfect combination. Honorable mention goes to Liam Hemsworth.
Kenna’s late boyfriend and Diem’s dad, Scotty Landry is the quintessential boy next door. He’s charismatic, level-headed, and had dreams of raising a family in the same town he grew up in. Tanner Buchanan showed off his sweet side in the 2021 remake He’s All That, and currently stars in Cobra Kai. The 25-year-old definitely has the right vibe to embody a young man in love.
Maybe it was her role as a literal cat lady in Hulu’s Dollhouse, but we can’t help but picture veteran actor Beth Grant as Kenna’s unfiltered and unbothered landlord Ruth, who thrusts one of the many kittens she has onto Kenna upon her arrival.
Lady Diana, aka Lucy, is Kenna’s teenage neighbor who has Down Syndrome. She also works at the grocery store alongside Kenna and the two become fast friends. They have an easy rapport that adds some fun and levity to the heavy themes throughout the book. Lily D. Moore, who played an outspoken and fashion-forward teenager in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, would be a great addition to the cast.
Amy is Kenna’s manager at the grocery store where she works. Described as a “short woman with silky black hair,” she’s jaded, a little sassy, and surprisingly caring. She’s the first person who ever takes a chance on Kenna and becomes a good friend. Though some fans think Maya Hawke or Zoey Deutch should be cast as Amy (and we can see why), we like Ashley Park for the role. Known for playing Emily’s spirited best friend in Emily in Paris, she’d be an excellent choice—even though she’s slightly taller than “short” at 5”6.
It seems like everyone who’s ever read Reminders of Him (including us!) wants Laura Dern cast as Grace Landry. The matriarch of the novel, Grace is traditional, fiercely protective, and completely consumed by grief. She has a lot of anger towards Kenna and does whatever she has to maintain custody of her granddaughter, Diem.
After seeing Laura crush it as Renata Klein in Big Little Lies and Marmee March in Little Women, we’re confident she could play this maternal role perfectly. Special shoutout to Connie Britton, who could also bring this character to life.
Beginning with his first role in 1988, Greg Kinnear has appeared in movies and TV shows for over 30 years. The Little Miss Sunshine actor would have no problem portraying an emotional father and grandfather who’s lost his only child and is trying to protect his family.
Jharrel Jerome cut his teeth in Moonlight, before starring in Netflix’s When They See Us and Amazon Prime’s I’m a Virgo. He’d have no problem starring as Roman, Ledger’s close friend and coworker who’s dealing with his sobriety. He’s known for playing devil’s advocate and often is the voice of reason for Ledger. That being said, we also wouldn’t hate to see Outer Banks’ Jonathan Daviss in this role.
Benji and Robin Ward are Ledger’s fun-loving parents who are nauseatingly in love with each other. They pop in and out of town while traveling the country in their RV, and love to tease their son even though they’re fiercely proud of him. A lot of readers imagine Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Benji Ward, and we’re going to take it one step further and dream-cast his IRL wife, Hilarie Burton. Who better to play a couple in love than a couple in love?
Though she’s a few years older than four-year-old Diem, Alina Brice—who made her film debut in Steven Speilberg’s The Fablemans—could play the curious and dragon-obsessed daughter of Kenna and Scotty. However, if she ages out by the time the movie starts filming, there may be another child actor with russet hair and a spunky attitude who could step into the role.
