Joe Jonas Responds to Sophie Turner’s Lawsuit

On September 21, 2023, hours after Sophie’s documents were revealed. Joe’s reps sent a statement to People about his stance. “After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case. Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago,” the statement read.

The statement continued, “Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids. They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup.”

The statement also alleged that less than 24 hours after the “amicable co-parenting setup” was agreed upon, “Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK. Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately. If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida Court order.”

 The two are allegedly “seeking shared parenting with the kids so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and is, of course, also okay with the kids being raised both in the U.S. and the UK,” but also alleges that the children “have spent the vast majority of their lives in the U.S.”

“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending. When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted,” the statement continues.

Why is Sophie Turner suing Joe Jonas?

On September 21, 2023, Page Six reported that Sophie Turner is suing Joe Jonas. The Game of Thrones actress filed for “the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained,” the documents, which were obtained by Page Six, stated.

Turner claims in the filing that the “wrongful retention” began September 20, 2023, and also claimed that the former couple would make England their “forever home” and would begin looking for schools for their older daughter, Willa, in the country. “The parties were both excited for the family’s move to England,” the documents stated, adding that it was the reason why the two sold their Miami home.

The family officially relocated from Miami to England on April 10, 2023, but Jonas and Turner “agreed with hesitation” that the children travel with the Jonas Brothers member on tour, since he had time to spend during the day.

“The children would then at least be able to spend some time during the day with one of their parents until the Mother finished her filming commitments,” the documents explain, noting that the daughters traveling on tour would only be a “temporary arrangement” when she was filming Joan.

Turner also claimed that Jonas retains the children’s passports “The Father has possession of the children’s passports,” the documents claim. “He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother.” Turner is also planning to have a similar lawsuit in the UK since it would allegedly be a “breach” of her custody rights.

The document doesn’t outrightly accuse Jonas of abduction, but mentions the word several times in it. The document reads: “This Verified Petition is brought pursuant to The Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, done at the Hauge on October 25, 1980… and the International Abduction Remedies Act.”
