Sophie Turner shades Joe Jonas while out with Taylor Swift

Turner was out with her bestie Taylor Swift, whose house she’s been staying in while the details of her divorce—including custody of their two children—are ironed out. Turner shared a photo—and has since deleted it—of a beaded friendship bracelet on Turner’s wrist that read Fearless, which many believe to be a reference to Swift’s 2008 album of the same name; an album which features the vault song, “Mr. Perfectly Fine” about Swift’s breakup from Jonas. They dated for a brief three months when Swift was 18.

Why did Sophie and Joe divorce?

As for why Turner and Jonas split, some sources, quoted by MailOnline, have said that Turner felt robbed of her young adulthood by marrying Jonas at 23 and spending her teen years on Game of Thrones.

The friend revealed: “Sophie feels like she’s only just waking up to what her life and reality really is. She became famous at a very young age, then married and had kids at a young age and never really had the teenage years of sleeping around and just having carefree fun with friends.”

Jonas and Turner’s divorce documents, obtained by People revealed, “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken,” with sources explaining that the split did not come as a “surprise” to those who were close to the couple. “They were not separated but they’ve been living separate lives for months,” the source said. “As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they’re figuring it out in real-time. They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he’s been on tour. Sophie’s been working in the UK.”

The source continued: “She feels like her life has stalled after Game of Thrones and so has her personal life. Since the kids came along, she’s feeling trapped. She’s the only person in her tight friendship group who is married with two children. Now she feels that she wants to make up for the time she’s lost as a young person. He (Joe) wants a more settled life but she’s not ready for that because she feels that she’s not even had a teen or young adult life.”

The friend also said that family priorities were a point of contention between the couple: “Joe would like another kid, he’s a real family man. But while Sophie’s been in the UK, she’s also realized just how much she misses this country; it’s the final nail in the coffin for them.”

In a joint statement issued to Instagram, the couple explained: “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” they said.

According to a report by TMZ—the site first to break the news—Jonas filed the paperwork to end his marriage on September 5, 2023, hiring attorney Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Woods’ divorce. Jonas would be asking for joint custody of the couple’s two children, Willa born in 2020 and their other daughter, Delphine, born in 2022.

On September 21, 2023, hours after Sophie’s documents were revealed. Joe’s reps sent a statement to People about his stance. “After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case. Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago,” the statement read.

The statement continued, “Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids. They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup.”

The statement also alleged that less than 24 hours after the “amicable co-parenting setup” was agreed upon, “Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK. Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately. If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida Court order.”

 The two are allegedly “seeking shared parenting with the kids so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and is, of course, also okay with the kids being raised both in the U.S. and the UK,” but also alleges that the children “have spent the vast majority of their lives in the U.S.”

“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending. When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted,” the statement continues.
