Sunglasses have come a long way. Through the years, the sun-shielding accessory has evolved from being an eye protector to a must-have fashion item. While trending silhouettes like cat-eye and aviator have reigned supreme, we’re seeing a gravitation towards more innovative designs that take inspiration from workwear, athletics, and even out of space. Colors are also buzzy, with major fashion houses like Balenciaga and Loewe recently offering up bold frames in bold colors like bright greens and fiery reds.

As we look towards 2025, it’s safe to say statement sunglasses are still very much the moment, and the spring/summer runways of the hottest labels provided us with major inspiration. Brands like Victoria Beckham, Vetements, and Septwolves had us ready for the year 2040 with sunglasses that featured strikingly modern designs—like long dynamic lines and sharp angles, finished with metallic hues and dark lenses. Non-tinted lenses, meanwhile, dominated the runways of Christopher Esber, Zimo, and Ulla Johnson, giving the accessory a light and airy feel. While it seems a bit contradictory, clear sunglasses can still work—as long as the lenses feature (safe) UV-absorbing chemicals.

The runways were also a lesson on styling sunglasses. An exciting pair of sunnies can make or break an outfit. Take something like a white T-shirt and jeans, for example. If you pop a red sweater over your shoulders as well as a pair of red oversized shades—you’ve brought your look from good to great. You can look at sunglasses as an outfit finisher, something that helps your look feel complete or just stand out. On the Vetements catwalk, one model strutted her stuff in a roomy black blazer paired with silver shades. The combination gave the blazer some unexpected edge with little to no effort.
