SZA Addressed Whether Drake Is Actually a Bad Kisser—See Who Else She’s Dated

Travis Scott (2023)

SZA doesn’t seem to be in a relationship now, and her last rumored relationship was with rapper Travis Scott. Rumors of a relationship started swirling after the rapper made a surprise appearance at SZA’s Manchester, England show in June of 2023. The two were already familiar with each other, having collaborated on songs like “Love Galore,” “Open Arms” and “Telekinesis.”

For social media, this was enough, particularly considering it came after Scott’s breakup with Kylie Jenner. And the speculation reached a fever pitch when SZA made a surprise cameo in Travis Scott’s “K-pop” video, featuring the Weeknd and Bad Bunny. However, neither of them ever confirmed the relationship.

Kehlani (2021)

In 2021, there were rumors that SZA was dating fellow singer-songwriter Kehlani after the two were seen holding hands when they were walking into Rihanna’s Met Gala after-party. An Instagram Story from that night, shared by Kehlani, showed the two riding in a car together, with the caption, “Don’t speak to me or my girlfriend ever again.” SZA also threw a surprise party for Kehlani earlier in the year.

Neither of them ever confirmed the relationship.

Unnamed fiancé (2009-2018)

SZA has never confirmed the name of her former fiancé, but she was engaged to a fashion designer—believed to be Scott Sasso—who she met right out of high school. In a 2023 cover story for Rolling Stone she shared that they’d become unengaged five or six years before and that the two had been together for 11 years and engaged for 5.

But that’s not the only influence this relationship had on the singer-songwriter. In fact, in an interview with Apple Music, SZA discussed how the relationship made her pursue music.  “[I] really only did music to prove a point,” she said. “When I started making music, it was to my ex-fiancé, because he was paying for everything. My food, my clothes, where I lived—and he was eight years my senior, so I was so codependent.”

As it’s typical of her, SZA hasn’t commented on why the relationship ended. Considering she shaded him during a concert in 2023 in London and has also discussed how he was the inspiration for “Nobody Gets Me,” it’s probably safe to say that things didn’t really end well.

“This particular song in its entirety is a story about my ex-fiancé and how we went through all these arguments, and we broke up,” she said. “And when we first broke up, it was like terrible, and I just felt like I was gonna be doomed to be in hell for the rest of my life, because nobody understood me the way he did, and nobody motivated me the way he did.”

Drake (2009)

One of the few confirmed relationships we know of for SZA is with Drake. She addressed the relationship in 2020 after Drake brought it up first during the lyrics for his guest appearance on 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s “Mr. Right Now.” The lyrics said: “Yeah, said she wanna fuck to some SZA, wait / ’Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08 / If you cool with it, baby, she can still play.”

“So It was actually 2009 lol 🙃.. in this case a year of poetic rap license mattered 🥴 lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.. it’s all love all peace 🤝💎💫,” she wrote on social media.

There were reports she wasn’t very pleased to be mentioned, but in a 2022 interview with Audacy, she had this to say about their current relationship. “We’re cool, we’ve always been cool,” she said, adding. “It’s never been weird. It’s never come completely out of the blue.”

Later, she also told Rolling Stone for a 2023 cover story, “[We] were really young. It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish,” and even addressed whether Drake was a bad kisser in an episode of Hot Ones Versus, even if she didn’t actually give an answer. “We were children!” SZA said. “We were children — 2009, we were children” she responded to Keke Palmer saying “He must’ve been terrible.” No comment on what that means.
