You know you have to wear sunscreen every day, regardless of the temperature or how much sun is peeking out of the clouds. But with all the options out there, finding the best option for you and your skin type can get a bit overwhelming. A tinted sunscreen can be a great option, especially for those with sensitive skin. Allow us to explain.

Mineral sunscreens are said to offer the most protection because they create a barrier between your face and the sun. They use either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, or both. That doesn’t mean chemical sunscreens are bad or unsafe. (Seriously, don’t listen to random folks on TikTok.) But the big problem with mineral sunscreens is that they’re white, pasty white, on all skin tones, especially dark ones. The addition of iron oxides helps reduce whiteness. These cosmetic pigments derived from mineral deposits create the subtle “tint” you see in a one-shade tinted sunscreen.

Best Tinted Sunscreens at a Glance

Super-sheer tinted mineral sunscreens often work well on all skin tones because the pigments adjust to the skin. But sometimes there are too many of the wrong pigments and the shade can look too light. That’s why many brands (such as Tower 28, ILIA, and Tula) added color to make 15-30 shades as a lightweight foundation that will work for everybody to protect the skin and even the tone at the same time.

Below, find some of the best tinted sunscreens on the market for all different skin types and tones—including some editor-approved picks.
