Trinity Rodman Has a Complicated Relationship With Her NBA Dad—Meet Him & Her Mom

If there’s one constant in Trinity Rodman’s life, it’s her mom, Michelle Moyer. Trinity isn’t shy about showing her love and appreciation for her mother. A few months before heading to the Paris Olympics with Team USA, Trinity took to Instagram to gush about her mom, calling her “her world” and “her rock.”

“Mamas turn… to the craziest perfection I’ve ever seen. I think the world already knows this woman is my world and my rock and my right hand man,” Trinity wrote alongside a photo of herself and her mom. “Strongest person I know but she still manages to put a smile on and be the best mom every single day even when she doesn’t have the energy or want to do the little things I ask her to do cuz I’m actually tired 🥹 she is so open minded and willing to learn everyday and work on things.”

But Michelle’s role in Trinity’s life goes beyond just being supportive. She’s been there through thick and thin, including some pretty tough times. When Trinity was little, Michelle filed for divorce from her father. The process dragged on for years, and during this time, the Rodman kids didn’t have much contact with their dad.

Things got really tough at one point, and the family even lived in a Comfort Inn in Orange County for almost a year. But Michelle, being the amazing mom she is, tried to make the best of a difficult situation. In a 2022 ESPN feature on her daughter Trinity, she said, “I wanted to make it like a vacation. I would let them jump on the beds and do whatever they wanted, so it wasn’t necessarily like, ‘Oh God, we don’t have anything. We’re staying at this motel.'” Clearly, Michelle knew how to make lemons out of lemonade.

If you’re into basketball at all, you probably know Dennis Rodman as the eccentric former NBA star—but to Trinity, he’s just dad. Now, for those who might not be familiar with him, Dennis is a former NBA superstar who made waves both on and off the court. He’s a five-time NBA champion, known for his exceptional rebounding skills and defensive play. But Dennis is perhaps equally famous for his colorful personality, outrageous fashion choices, and headline-grabbing antics off the court.

Despite his fame and success in basketball, when it comes to his relationship with Trinity, things haven’t always been so successful. Dennis has been open about his struggles as a father. In a September 19, 2021 interview with ESPN, he shared, “We all have demons. We all have things we have to handle and take care of. But I think the only demon I really have these days, that I pretty much have cleared up a lot of these things up in my life. I think the only major demon I have right now is trying to convince myself that I’m a good dad. That’s the worst one right now for me.”

It’s clear that Dennis recognizes he hasn’t always been there for his kids, and it’s something he still grapples with today. As for Trinity, being the daughter of an NBA Hall of Famer could certainly come with high expectations—but the soccer player has successfully been able to carve out her own identity as an athlete.

“I think maybe when I was younger, a lot of people had this expectation that everything was handed to me,” she told People in March 2023. “But in terms of actually on the field, I don’t think I struggled that much with that, just because we do play different sports and I don’t think anybody had the performance expectations in a sense.”

Does Trinity Rodman have a relationship with her father?

The short answer? It’s complicated. Trinity herself has been pretty candid about her relationship with her dad Dennis, or lack thereof.

In a heartfelt Instagram post from November 8, 2021, she opened up about her feelings around her father. “This last game was an extremely emotional one. Yes Dennis rodman showed up to an Nwsl game, but also my dad, after YEARS surprised me at a big game in my career, I was shocked, overwhelmed, happy, sad, everything,” she wrote. “My dad doesn’t play a big role in my life at all and most people don’t know that, we don’t see eye to eye on many things. I go months if not years without his presence or communication.”

She went on to say, “Being in spotlights has been hard for us, him and me. We don’t have the best relationship, but at the end of the day he’s human I’m human… he’s my dad, and I’m his little girl that will never change. I will improve and look forward everyday as I hope he does.”
