Basketball is a sport where height is considered an advantage—the closer to the basket, the easier, right? There may not be a prescripted requirement, but if the heights of the USA’s Olympic team are anything to go by, you’d better be above average.

It doesn’t always matter, however, Spud Webb was 5 feet 7 inches and was among the most electric dunkers in the ’80s NBA. Muggsy Bogues, the NBA’s shortest player in history, stood at 5 feet 3 inches and he had a reasonably successful career in the 90s.

While there’s debate as to whether the NBA is less physical than in previous decades—commissioner Adam Silver said that in the late 90s brand of basketball “de-emphasized the particular skill a player had and maybe weighed too heavily on physicality”—we can all agree that the heights of Team USA’s Olympic players in 2024 are mighty impressive.
