If you’re on the hunt for the next big thing in fashion and design for 2024, there’s a good chance the “new” thing you discover actually isn’t new at all. New fashion trends and vintage fashion trends for 2024 are almost synonymous. In the wake of rapid trend cycles, an oversaturated market, and a climate crisis, designers and consumers are repicturing, reinventing, and reusing items from the past to shape the design of the future.

Wearing or using something old doesn’t necessarily mean that it looks old. When it comes to shopping, whether that be for an outfit, furniture, or even a car, you’ll find that vintage pieces and recycled textiles are being rebranded for a modern aesthetic. I guarantee that you can find a cooler (and higher quality version) of a velvet holiday blazer or huge gold art deco earrings at a local vintage store than you can at Zara.

When you see a fashion style emerge on the runway, the designers are typically pulling inspiration from another era. If you see that era represented at least three times throughout a fashion season, you’ve got a trend. During the spring/summer ‘24 shows that debuted during fashion week back in September, there were a few major trends that were clearly vintage-inspired

Designers like Prabal Gurung and Celine brought back the drop-waist dress, ‘80s-inspired boxy blazers, and satin trench coats. These pieces may be new, but the basic structure of their silhouettes was inspired by womenswear from decades ago. The easiest way to get ahead of these 2024 fashion trends is to source the original versions.

Luckily, finding specific trending vintage pieces has never been easier. Sites like TheRealReal, Poshmark, Depop, and ThreadUp have modernized vintage shopping with specific keyword searches, algorithm-suggested pieces, and post alerts. Chances are, the item you desire (with a corresponding price tag) is out there, you just know how to look, and wait.

If you’re eager to jump on one of the vintage-inspired fashion trends, I recommend searching the secondhand racks and apps before opting for a fast-fashion version. It may take a bit longer to find what you’re looking for—if you’re not willing to wait a bit to acquire the trendy piece, you probably won’t want it or use it for very long anyway.

Other design sectors, like the car industry, are also trying to take a more sustainable approach to creating new products. I recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain to be one of the first people to drive the fully electric Volvo EX30. In between the time I spent perusing Barcelona’s excellent selection of vintage stores, I was able to explore the city behind the wheel of Volvo’s new creation.

The electric Volvo EX30 is a stylish, small SUV with a sleek interior and exterior design. The car’s body appears to be both futuristic and inspired by nature—a suggestion that the electric vehicle model can help technology and nature coexist. Not only did I love that the vehicle is fully electric, but I also loved that the interior of the car was created with recycled and renewable materials.

An old pair of jeans you donated could very well be repurposed to create the interior of a new Volvo EX30. Volvo used recycled and renewable denim, flax, and a wool blend to craft the interior of the future-forward car.

The interior color of the car was created using the short fibers from recycled denim that usually fall away as waste during the recycling process. The top layer of the car’s interior is made up of 50 percent recycled denim fibers—the result is sporty, modern and monochromatic with the vehicle’s upholstery. The Volvo EX30 has the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo car created to date and is helping the company work towards climate neutrality by 2040.

The Volvo EX30 is a result of the Scandinavian design philosophy that less is more and that every piece of the design should serve a purpose. These principles have also sparked a revival in vintage furniture shopping—especially for items deemed Mid-Century Modern. Buying new furniture is expensive and often takes weeks or even months to arrive with supplies from major retailers constantly on backorder. Shopping for furniture secondhand is a great way to guarantee you that actually like the piece and can help create a unique and personal home environment.

Natural materials and tones are a vintage-inspired furniture trend for 2024. You can expect to see an influx of cane material, antique vanities and credenzas, and rounded silhouettes on your Pinterest board.

If you feel inspired to dress, decorate, or even drive more sustainably, the best place you can start is in your own closet, storage room, or garage. Keep reading for five vintage fashion trends to bring back in 2024.
