He was dropped unceremoniously, and it’s turned into the sport’s biggest mystery: everyone wants to know what Corey Perry did to get fired from the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL is being super cagey about it.

Born on May 16, 1985, in New Liskeard, Ontario, Perry was drafted in 2003 as the first round, 28th overall pick by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Playing the first 14 years of his career there and was part of the 2007 Stanley Cup-winning team, Perry is known for his goal-scoring ability and an abrasive playing style with an ability to get under his opponent’s skin; the former earned him the affectionate nickname “Scorey Perry”, the latter the less affectionate “the Worm”. He’s a multi-Olympic gold medal winner, a Memorial Cup champion, and captained Canada to gold at the 2016 IIHF World Championships.

In 2019, he moved to the Dallas Stars where he played his 1000th career regular season, becoming the 340th player in NHL history to do so. Despite a strong post-season performance that included game-winning goal assists, the Stars didn’t renew his contract. He moved to his childhood team, the Montreal Canadiens in 2021, signing a one-year $750,000 contract, where he finished ninth in team scoring with 21 points. He played in two consecutive Stanley Cup finals losing against the Tampa Bay Lightning; then in 2021 he joined the back-to-back champions on a two-year, $2 million contract. The Lightning qualified for the Stanley Cup 2022 but lost to the Colorado Avalanche. Perry became the first NHL player to ever lose three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals.

In June 2023, Perry joined the Chicago Blackhawks on a one-year, $4 million contract. But that would be short-lived. On November 25, the team announced he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons. Three days later, he was dropped by the team after an internal investigation revealed he’d engaged in “conduct that is unacceptable, and in violation, both of the terms of his Standard Player’s Contract and the Blackhawks’ internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments.” So, what did Corey Perry do to get fired from the Chicago Blackhawks? Here’s what we know, and bearing in mind, there’s a lot we don’t.
