What happened to Alex Collins? The former NFL running back who played for the Seattle Seahawks and the Baltimore Ravens, died in a motorcycle accident in South Florida on Sunday, August 13, 2023.

According to a news release from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office: “The crash occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 13, near the 3300 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard. The preliminary investigation revealed Alexander Collins was traveling eastbound on a 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K motorcycle on West Oakland Park Boulevard approaching Northwest 33rd Avenue. At the same time, an adult female was traveling westbound in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV on West Oakland Park Boulevard.”

The news alert continued: “According to investigators, at some point, the Chevrolet driver proceeded to turn left to travel south onto Northwest 33rd Avenue. As the car crossed the eastbound lanes, the motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the SUV. The impact caused the motorcyclist to enter the rear passenger side window of the Chevrolet and come to a final rest inside the car. The collision also caused the Chevrolet to rotate clockwise before finally resting. BSO deputies responded, and the motorcycle driver was pronounced deceased on scene.” The driver of the SUV was not named, but she remained nearby and helped police with their investigation, which is ongoing at the time of writing.

Seahawks and Ravens react to Alex Collins’ death

In a press release, the family released a statement via the Seahawks, saying: “Alex was cherished by his family and friends as well as supporters from all around the world. All who truly know him can attest to his drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality. We kindly request your thoughts and prayers for our family during this difficult time.”

The Ravens and head coach John Harbaugh also released statements on Collins’ death. “Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly,” Harbaugh said. “I’ll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impacted everyone he encountered. He was also a smart player who ran with unlimited determination, and he contributed to a lot of our success during his time in Baltimore. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex’s family. May he now rest in God’s eternal peace.”

Russell Wilson, who was quarterback for the Seahawks during Collins’ tenure, tweeted: “To one of my favorite teammates. You brought joy to every huddle. Keep Dancin’ in Heaven. Love you AC. Forever missed.”

Lamar Jackson, quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, said during a press conference. “He was here in my rookie year, we were always chatting and playing around in the locker room. Great energy, a great guy to be around. I’m just sorry for their loss, especially to his family, ‘cos he was a great guy.”

Robert Griffin III, a backup quarterback at the Ravens from 2018 until 2021, tweeted his fond memories of his teammate: “Alex Collins was so special man. Amazing teammate and a guy everyone was down to kick it with. This man invited me and wifey out one time in Baltimore and I will never forget it. We show up to the spot and AC is nowhere to be found. We are looking around for him for 20 min and finally I feel a little nudge on my shoulder. I turnaround and AC is walking behind me, drops his shades to his nose and signals with his eyes to follow him. It was so funny and smooth, we forgot he was 20 min late. AC told us he had to be discreet because he couldn’t have everyone knowing he was there. The rest of the night, we found out why.”

He continued: “Everywhere AC went that night everyone knew him. Everyone was excited to see him, laughing when he came around and showing him love. You see everyone loved this man and his energy was contagious. To end the night, he hit this dance with all the fans watching him on the dance floor. WHAT A NIGHT and WHAT A GUY AC WAS. Shared more laughs than people know and I’m blessed to have been your teammate my brother. Rest In Peace.”
