As the tributes on social media began to roll in on the evening of August 14, 2023, a lot of football fans are left wondering what happened to Alex Collins.

Collins was born on August 26, 1994, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was a natural athlete, named 2013’s Broward County Male Athlete of the Year, and committed to play college football at the University of Arkansas where he would rush for 300 yards in his first three games. In his sophomore season in 2014, Collins ran for 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns on 204 carries.

In 2016, he chose to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, in which he was projected to be a third-round pick—ranked the third-best running back by CBSSports.com prior to the combine. His performance at the Combine was described as “mediocre” but after participating in the Arkansas pro day, he had changed a lot of minds and was ranked the 10th best running back in the draft. The Seattle Seahawks ended up selecting Collins in the fifth round (171st overall), the 13th running back and one of three selected by the Seahawks.

He signed a four-year deal worth $2.2 million overall with a $184,000 bonus and made his debut in week two against the Los Angeles Rams. In 2017, he was waived by the Seahawks and joined the Baltimore Ravens, two teams that have paid tribute to him after what happened to Alex Collins.
