Get well soon! After the Mets made an official statement on their social media, many baseball fans might be wondering what happened to Darryl Strawberry. The MLB All-Star gave his fans an update just a day before his 62nd birthday.

Strawberry was active in MLB for 17 seasons. He famously played with the New York Mets, 1983 to 1990, winning NL Rookie of the Year in 1983. Throughout his career, he also played for other teams like Los Angeles Dodgers (1991-93), San Francisco Giants (1994) and New York Yankees (1995-99).

Though a celebrated athlete, Strawberry’s career has been affected by many health problems. He struggled with alcohol and drug addiction during his career. The baseball player colon cancer treatment that caused him to miss the 1998 World Series. He underwent surgery to remove the cancer in his colon as well as the cancer that spread to the lymph nodes.

Since retirement, Strawberry has been sober for more than a decade and runs a foundation with his wife, Tracy Strawberry. The foundation helps pay for treatment programs for addicts of every kind. In an interview with KTLA5 LA, he talked about how his wife was a great influence to him. “She told me I’d have to take off the baseball uniform and I’d have to grow up and become a man and take responsibility. I’d never heard someone say that to me before,” he explained.
