Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to love triangles. Remember the Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett “driver’s license” drama? This time, the “Please Please Please” singer might be singing about another fling that involves Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes.
Sabrina and Shawn were linked briefly in 2023, and the internet seems to think that most of the songs on the album might be about the lingering feelings she has after the “In My Blood” singer reunited with his on-and-off girlfriend Camila Cabello. In one song off Short N’ Sweet titled “Coincidence,” Sabrina sings, “The second I put my head on your chest / She knew, she’s got a real sixth sense / Now her name comes up once, then it comes up twice / And without her even bein’ here, she’s back in your life / Now she’s in the same damn city on the same damn night.”

We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward ❤️❤️❤️ Camila and Shawn.”
A source told Entertainment Tonight on November 18, 2021, that Camila and Shawn split because they’re in “totally different places in their lives.” The insider also confirmed that the breakup was “mutual” and that both singers are “sad” about the end of their relationship. “Shawn and Camila’s breakup was mutual,” the source said. “They realized they are in totally different places in their lives at this point, and it was time to end things. They’re both sad about the split, but doing their best to take care of themselves, stay busy and surround themselves by loved ones.”
Shawn and Sabrina were spotted hanging out for the first time on February 27, 2023. The two continue to hang out throughout March when they were also said to have snuck out of Miley Cyrus’s star-studded release party for her newest album Endless Summer Vacation. According to a video shared on Twitter, Mendes held the car door open for Carpenter as they made a low-key exit.
An insider told ET Online in an article published on March 13, 2023, that, “Shawn and Sabrina are seeing each other. They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key. They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together,” they said. “Shawn is happy.”
In an interview with Dutch television show RTL Boulevard, the “In My Blood” singer responded to the dating rumors, “We are not dating.”
Camila and Shawn were rumored to reunite at Coachella in April 2023. “They’re enjoying getting reacquainted and seeing where it goes,” an insider told Page Six, noting that the exes, “care about each other a lot.” They were also spotted holding hands on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Los Angeles, California.
Sabrina drops “Cindy Lou Who” which people speculated was about the Shawn and Camila Coachella situation. “Maybe he met you somewhere in the desert / While he was soul-searchin’, he found someone better / Guess you make him happy like I couldn’t do,” she sang.
Camila revealed to Elle that she couldn’t get Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” out of her head at the Met Gala.
Camila sings about Shawn and Sabrina dating in her song “June Gloom” from her album C, XOXO. “I feel my body scream when you talk / She’s cool, I heard / Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures, we’re a
House fire, for sure / Hope it’ll burn out, but it just gets bigger,” she sings.
Sabrina Carpenter dropped her highly anticipated album Short N’ Sweet. Many fans speculated three songs to be about her fling with Shawn Mendes and his reunion with Camila.
In the opening track “Taste,” she sings about sharing a guy with another girl. “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too,” she sings.
One song “Coincidence” specifically talks about an escapade to the California desert, which is kind of a call back to the Coachella incident. “What a surprise, your phone just died / Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs / Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side? / Damn it, she looks kinda like the girl you outgrew.”
Later, Sabrina roasts a man who is manipulative and seeped in his own masculinity but still embraces meditation and self-care in “Dumb & Poetic.” She sings, “It’s just what I fall for, I like the aesthetic / Every self-help book, you’ve already read it / Cherry-pick lines like they’re words you invented / Gold star for highbrow manipulation.”
Sabrina hasn’t revealed who the man actually is. She told Zane Lowe on Apple Music Radio 1, “Songs like ‘Dumb & Poetic,’ a gentle acoustic ballad that’s also a blistering takedown of a guy who masks his sleazy tendencies with therapy buzzwords and a highbrow record collection.”
In an interview with John Mayer on his Sirius XM show, he referenced a past love triangle. “I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes told Mayer. “Maybe instead of two days it could have been two weeks.”
Mendes added, “The biggest lesson I’ve heard is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.” If you’ve read the above, you’ll know that it lines up with the timeline.
During her set at the iHeartRadio festival, Camila Cabello performed Señorita without Shawn Mendes and left out the lyric “taste” in the line “You say we’re just friends / But friends don’t know the way you taste,” which seemingly referenced Sabrina’s “Taste.”
