Yoga is my go-to workout for head-to-toe health. I love the mindfulness nature of a vinyasa flow and how the active meditation of a yoga class can help me get out of my own way, all while strengthening my body and breaking a sweat. As someone who sweats a lot, I don’t need a hot yoga class to perspire profusely—and yet I still love to sign up for the occasional heated studio session (where I ultimately end up dripping in sweat).
After over a decade of sweaty yoga poses, I have learned a lot about what to wear to hot yoga and the best yoga leggings, tops, and sports bras for moving through a challenging vinyasa flow.
When sweating it out in a hot yoga class, you want to wear something that is lightweight and breathable with moisture-wicking properties—and it doesn’t hurt to also have some anti-odor benefits (like the Rhone Serene Tank), too. Nylon is a go-to material for yoga pants, tops, and sports bras because it is usually supportive enough without feeling too restrictive (so long as it has some good spandex or elastane stretch to it). Nylon is also moisture-wicking, so it can help keep you dry while you sweat.
Whether you’re in a heated studio or not, you want to avoid wearing athleisure with a lot of compression since this can feel restrictive while you flow. Look for light compression with tons of stretch instead. It’s also worth avoiding heavy or thick materials, since these can feel suffocating while you sweat in a heated studio. And, if you want to wear layers to class, make sure you are prepared to strip down to a sleeveless top or even a sports bra, because there is nothing worse than having to finish a hot yoga class in a long-sleeve top.
Need help deciding what to wear to hot yoga? Ahead, I share some of my go-to yoga clothes for women, including the best leggings for hot yoga and the onesie I live in, even when I’m not at the studio.
