How to Shop for a Wedding Ring Online, According to an Expert

While shopping online for jewelry can be stressful, some experts say that it’s actually preferred over in-person shopping. “You’re shopping from the comfort of your home, with endless options and ample opportunity to check out the jeweler’s work, style, etc.,” says Kristy Cullinane, the co-founder of Plum Diamonds. You just have to know what to look for and consider.

First, Cullinane says to take a retailer’s ring sizing policy into account. “If you get your ring and it doesn’t fit, will [the brand] help?” she adds. This is a fair point and something that can vary a lot from brand to brand. If a brand doesn’t offer a specific ring sizing service, you can also look at the return policy to get an idea of how long you have to exchange the band.

When going the custom route, most retailers won’t offer returns on one-of-a-kind items, so definitely measure your size before adding anything to your cart. “Many jewelers offer printable sizers you can cut out, or you can measure the inside diameter of a well-fitting ring and compare it to an online chart,” says Jillian Sassone, the founder and creative director of Marrow Fine. “Wrapping a string or paper strip around your finger and measuring that length also works.” Fingers can shrink and swell during the day, so measure more than once and, when in doubt, visit a local jeweler to get sized professionally.

In addition to the ring’s size and the brand’s return policy, Sassone says the shopping experience details also matter. “Look for clear photos from multiple angles, including shots of the ring worn on a hand or styles with other pieces,” she explains. “These [details] help you imagine how it fits into your everyday look.”

If your ring has diamonds or other stones in it, Sassone also recommends reviewing those details for an understanding of the cut, clarity, and overall quality. “It’s also important that any diamonds or gemstones come with trusted certifications from reputable labs (or appraisals when applicable),” she adds. “These give you confidence in the authenticity and craftsmanship of your piece.”
