If you’re looking for fantasy football options and feel a bit stuck, you’ll need to know which NFL teams are on bye this week so you don’t accidentally put one of them in your starting lineup because, well, they’re not playing. The bye week in the NFL serves several purposes, and its primary function is to provide teams with a week of rest and recovery during the regular season.

Coaches also use the bye week to evaluate team performance, analyze strengths and weaknesses, and make necessary adjustments to their game plans, while teams can use the bye week to conduct additional practices, work on fundamentals, and introduce new plays or strategies. This extra time can be valuable for improving team cohesion and individual skills. Bye weeks also help ensure that each team has a consistent schedule and an equal number of games throughout the season. It prevents scheduling conflicts and provides a balanced playing field.

The timing of bye weeks can be a controversial topic because some people believe that a later bye week gives a team an advantage—a notion that was debunked by famed sports writer Bill Barnwell in 2012, who observed from his study: “In fact, if anyone’s playing better over the course of a season, it appears to be teams with extremely early bye weeks!”

He continued: “The correlation coefficient — which measures the relationship between two sets of variables — between these two groups is -0.50, which is a reasonably powerful relationship for football. It suggests that there’s a notable relationship between having an early bye week and winning (or a late bye week and losing), although I’m skeptical that it would hold up over a larger sample. The average bye week has a sample size of just over 57 teams in this study.”

Without further ado, if you’re wondering which NFL teams are on bye, here’s the rundown for 2023/24 season.
