Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Nearly Normal Family. It’s another English adaptation of Nordic noir, and the question on everyone’s lips is who killed Christoffer in A Nearly Normal Family. The mini-series is based on the psychological thriller novel written by M.T. Edvardsson of the same name and debuted at number two on Netflix’s most-watched shows on November 24, 2023.

The story revolves around the Sandell family: father Adam, a pastor; mother Ulrika, a criminal defense attorney; and their teenage daughter, Stella. The family seems ordinary, but their lives take a drastic turn when Stella is accused of murdering Christoffer Olsen, the man she’s been seeing.

The novel is divided into three parts, each narrated by one of the family members, who are all unreliable retellers in their own way. The first part is told from Stella’s perspective, providing insight into her thoughts and emotions leading up to the crime. The second part is narrated by Adam, as he grapples with the shocking accusation against his daughter.

The final part is from Ulrika’s viewpoint, focusing on her role as a defense attorney torn between her professional duty and her love for her child. As the story unfolds, secrets, lies, and hidden truths emerge, challenging the concept of what constitutes a “normal” family. The narrative explores themes of morality, justice, and the lengths to which parents will go to protect their children.

The show, meanwhile, jumps from the perspectives of each family member several times. “From the first encounter with this story, I have appreciated that it really has something at heart,” Per Hanefjord told Netflix. “It raises complex issues, offers depth of character, and all the while with engaging suspense.” Here’s who killed Christoffer in A Nearly Normal Family.
