How did Bryan Randall die? The 57-year-old passed away after a private, three-year battle with ALS. In a statement announcing his death, his family said: It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS. Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request.”

The statement continued: “We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours. At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan,” the statement concluded, signed, “His Loving Family.”

What is ALS?

ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It’s a rare neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. It is incurable, progressive, and there is no effective treatment. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, people with ALS will “eventually will not be able to stand or walk, get in or out of bed on their own, or use their hands and arms.”  

Early symptoms include:

• Muscle twitches in the arm, leg, shoulder, or tongue.
• Muscle cramps.
• Tight and stiff muscles (spasticity).
• Muscle weakness affecting an arm, a leg, the neck, or diaphragm.
• Slurred and nasal speech.
• Difficulty chewing or swallowing.

“ALS doesn’t affect your ability to taste, touch, or smell, or hear,” the NINDS states. “Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within three to five years from when the symptoms first appear. However, about 10 percent of people with ALS survive for a decade or more.”

Who are Bryan Randall and Sandra Bullock’s children?

Sandra Bullock and Bryan Randall parented three children together: Bullock’s son Louis, whom she adopted when he was an infant after Hurricane Katrina; Skylar Staten, Randall’s daughter from another relationship; and a second adoptee, Bullock’s daughter Leila. In a 2018 interview with Parenting, Bullock spoke of why she chose to adopt. “I did think, ‘Maybe not.’ Then [Hurricane] Katrina happened,” the Miss Congeniality star shared. “I’m going to cry … Katrina happened in New Orleans and something told me, ‘My child is there.’ It was weird.”

On their parenting styles, Bullock told Red Table Talk: “He’s the example that I would want my children to have,” adding: “I have a partner who’s very Christian and there are two different ways of looking at things. I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him.”

Why did Sandra Bullock quit acting?

In March 2022, Bullock announced she would be taking a step back from acting to focus on her family, likely with Randall’s health condition in mind. “I take my job very seriously when I’m at work,” she told Entertainment Tonight after filming Lost City with Channing Tatum. She noted acting is a “24/7” job, “and I just want to be 24/7 with my babies and my family. That’s where I’m gonna be for a while.” She’d be “servicing their every need,” she said, describing how she will spend her days away from Hollywood. “Their social calendar.” She continued: “All the parents know me as the crazy lady with the pandemic. They know their children will return without COVID when they’ve come to our house.”

Later during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Bullock said she wished more people would consider adoption. “If it wasn’t for adoption and foster care, I wouldn’t have my family, so this film really struck a chord in that there are millions upon millions of babies and children on this planet that have no one to love,” Bullock said, “That have no one to let them know they are the most amazing thing when they walk in a room.”
