He was one of the most beloved talk show hosts in US entertainment history but the reason why Jon Stewart left The Daily Show is surprisingly relatable. He left in 2015 after 16 years at the desk of the revered satirical news program, returning part-time in 2024 to help with coverage of the presidential election.

The Daily Show was created by Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg and first premiered on July 22, 1996, with Craig Kilborn as the original host. However, the show gained widespread popularity and critical acclaim when Stewart took over as host in 1999. After Stewart left, Trevor Noah stepped in as host and there he would remain until September 2022.

The program combines humor, satire, and news analysis to provide a comedic take on current events, politics, and cultural issues. During Jon Stewart’s tenure, the show became known for its sharp and insightful commentary on the news, often using humor to highlight absurdities and inconsistencies in political and media discourse.

Noah offered his own unique perspective. Coming of age under apartheid, Noah felt uniquely equipped to talk about the 2016 presidential election. “I know what it’s like to live in a country that’s extremely divided by race — where people feel like it’s crashing every day and they don’t trust that their president has their best interests at heart,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019.

“And we joke about it not to minimize it but to try and heal the wounds. Where there’s no conflict, pain or tragedy, I don’t know what to do. I’m a horrible superfluous comic. If anything, I’m only trained in this.” With all that said, here’s why Jon Stewart left The Daily Show and why he’s returning after 9 years.
