With 1989 (Taylor’s Version) out now, it’s time to revisit why Taylor Swift and Harry Styles broke up. The Midnights singer and “Watermelon Sugar” artist were linked briefly in 2012, but we can’t stop thinking about their relationship and the alleged impact it has on 1989.

It all started out with tiny crushes on each other at the Kids Choice Awards and Styles constantly gushing over the “Love Story” musician. “[Taylor]’s a really lovely girl,” he told Seventeen at the time. “Honestly, she couldn’t be a sweeter person. She’s a great girl and she’s extremely talented.” He went on to describe Swift as “one of those people you meet [who’s] genuinely a nice person. Some people you meet and they are not as nice as you make them out to be, but she’s one of those people who’s really just amazing.”

Harry then continued to tease the relationship when he told Cosmopolitan U.K., “There’s someone I like… but this girl… isn’t my ‘type.’ It’s more about the person. How they act, their body language, if they can laugh at themselves.” They confirmed their relationship when they were walking hand in hand in Central Park in New York City on November 2012.
