It’s a hint at Avengers: Secret Wars

Some fans think the scene is a nod to the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars film which is slated for 2027. Deadpool & Wolverine confirmed two things—that Deadpool and the X-Men both exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I think Deadpool dies in Secret Wars,” one wrote on Reddit. Another disagreed, saying, “The MCU just got him, I’m not sure they’d kill him off like that so soon.”

Paradox did say the moment was a “future event.” In Secret Wars, Earth-616 and Earth-10005 collide due to an incursion and perhaps Deadpool makes the ultimate sacrifice, dying in Thor’s arms. Though, he gets his wish, he finally becomes an Avenger. WELP.

The variant theory

Deadpool & Wolverine is chock-full of references and Easter Eggs to other Marvel-related occurrences not necessarily depicted in the MCU (the crucified Wolverine, anyone?). Given that Wade frequently mumbles about Thor in his sleep, this TVA footage may be just another Deadpool variant. It’s interesting, though, that the shot mirrors Loki’s death in The Dark World from 2013, so where does this “distant future” element come into it? Hmm.

It’s just a joke

Apparently, there were a few scrapped ideas in the lead-up to Deadpool & Wolverine and we think this is the most plausible explanation for Thor crying over Deadpool. Wendy Jacobson, the film’s executive producer, told The National that before Hugh Jackman was cast, there were many ideas for the direction Deadpool 3 should go.

“There were so many ideas. We had an indie road trip-type movie with Deadpool and Dopinder,” she said. “We had a Deadpool deleted scenes extravaganza, where we were going to try to recreate iconic scenes from the MCU films, but now you’re seeing what you didn’t see before—Deadpool was there, his footage just got cut. At one point, there was an idea for a frame-for-frame remake of Thor: The Dark World but with Deadpool until the first act break. It really ran the gamut.”
