These Wicked Movie Spoilers Reveal All the Changes From the Musical—Including if There Are New Songs & Characters

There are no new musical numbers

The Wicked Part One soundtrack reveals no new songs, and instead lists the following, which are all part of the Broadway musical:

1. “No One Mourns The Wicked”
2. “Dear Old Shiz”
3. “The Wizard And I”
4. “What Is This Feeling?”
5. “Something Bad”
6. “Dancing Through Life”
7. “Popular”
8. “I’m Not That Girl”
9. “One Short Day”
10. “A Sentimental Man”
11. “Defying Gravity”

This means that purists can breathe a sigh of relief. It also means that considering Wicked Part One is 2 hours and 40 minutes, which is almost the entire runtime of the musical, which is 2 hours and 45 minutes, the movie will need to add a lot of non-musical backstories to the characters to justify the runtime. Particularly considering that Wicked Part One seems to end exactly where Act 1 ends, with “Defying Gravity.” Parts of the song “Popular” have already leaked online.

Per the soundtrack, there is only one new song titled “Ozdust Duet,” credited to The Wicked Orchestra. That means it’s likely to be an instrumental song.

The Wicked movie is set to be released in two parts

Wicked Part One is set to be released on November 22, 2024. The sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2025. The decision to split the movie in two was made to avoid cutting songs or characters. The musical has a time jump between Act 1 and Act 2, with the first act taking place when Glinda and Elphaba are younger, and the second act taking place after Elphaba has already established herself as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Glinda’s father is set to play a role in the movie

Adam James has been cast as Glinda’s father in Wicked Part One, which means the movie will delve deeper into Glinda’s backstory than the musical ever did—and perhaps even show us a bit of her home life before she attended Shiz. The novel gives some backstory on her father, but not extensively.

Elphaba’s parents have also been cast

Elphaba’s mother, Melena Thropp, appears briefly in the musical and seems set to have a bigger role in Wicked Part One. Courtney-Mae Briggs is set to play the role.  Meanwhile, Andy Nyman is set to play Governor Thropp in the flick – the supposed father of Elphaba and father of Nessarose and Elphaba, and a senior figure in Munchkinland.
