Every creature—no matter how big or small—has an important role to play in our ecosystem. And although insects may make you flinch, our world wouldn’t survive without them. The truth is, these creepy-crawly sentient beings are vastly misunderstood and their beauty regularly goes unnoticed. Let’s take a moment to appreciate these buggers and discuss the insect that captures each zodiac sign, because as Royal Astronomer Martin Rees once said: “An insect is more complicated than a star.”

Although we may feel superior to insects, they’ve been on this planet far longer than us and will likely outlive us. They’re tuned into the frequencies of the earth in a way we can’t begin to comprehend, navigating the underbelly of our natural world with ease and building their own flourishing societies. Although your initial reaction may be to turn away and squirm, let’s remember that our existence depends on their existence. And if you’re willing to learn a bit more about them—especially the insects that gross you out—you may discover that it’s much easier to appreciate them than to resent them.

As with all things, not every insect is created equally. No offense to mosquitos, termites, or ticks, but when I say “Insects are cool,” I’m definitely not talking about you. I’m talking about the lethal and downright alien praying mantis or the mysterious and eerily adorable moth. I’m talking about the much-beloved bumble bee or the wise and ancient grasshopper. Because insects are so layered, powerful, and unique, there’s at least one fascinating insect that perfectly captures each zodiac sign. Here’s yours:
