‘Serial’ is Becoming a TV Show
It’s been almost a year since “Serial” essentially took over the world—or at least the world’s water coolers—and now it seems the little podcast that could is headed to television. Before you get too excited though, it seems the show won’t be a dramatization, but rather a cable series that would follow the making of the podcast itself.
According to Deadline, Fox 21 studios, as well as Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (the guys behind “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street”) have optioned the rights to the Peabody-winning radio phenomenon co-created by This American Life‘s Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder.
One thing to note: The series—which sounds like it’ll resemble a documentary—won’t follow the making of season one, which delved into the 1999 murder of Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee, and her accused killer and ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed.
While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s been widely reported that season two or three of the podcast will focus on the story of U.S. Army sergeant and prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl, a case that attracted international attention, as opposed to Lee and Sayed’s story, which barely made headlines outside of Maryland before getting the “Serial” treatment.
Although the TV series is a go, execs are looking for a writer to pen the adaptation, then plan to shop it to networks.
