Almost a decade after the end of The Vampire Diaries, Candice King is back with another teen drama, and she’s reuniting with another Mystic Falls alum.
King stars as Bess Sinclair, the mother of Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, in Prime Video‘s new psychological thriller, We Were Liars. Based on E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel of the same name, We Were Liars follows the Sinclairs, a wealthy and seemingly perfect family who spend every summer together on their private island, as they investigate a mysterious incident involving Cadence Sinclair Eastman, the eldest of the Sinclair grandchildren. The series is developed by Carina Adly Mackenzie and Julie Plec, the latter of whom also co-created The Vampire Diaries.
“Does anyone do teen love story drama better than Julie Plec or Carina Mackenzie? I don’t think so. They just write such wonderfully layered characters, not just for teens, but for adults as well. Most people I meet who watch The Vampire Diaries are adults,” King told StyleCaster. “That’s not just Carina and Julie. That’s also E. Lockhart, who wrote the book and the sequel, Family of Liars. I love the genre. I love watching the young storylines that remind me falling in love for the first time, just as much as I love all of these sisters and adults and chaos brewing up for these children who are just trying to figure out who they are in the world.”
In honor of King’s new show, StyleCaster took her down memory lane in our “Digital Footprint Diary” series, where she looked back on clips throughout her career—from her famous “Burn It” line on The Vampire Diaries that turned into a viral TikTok meme to the time she performed as a backup singer for Miley Cyrus on her Hannah Montana tour. And yup—we got her to react to her Vampire Diaries audition and the time she saved co-star Nina Dobrev from a falling backdrop as well.
