A lot can be learned from Gen Z. They’re the first generation to grow up with the internet, social media, and other forms of advanced technology. They’re bold, opinionated, and unapologetically boisterous about everything from politics to fashion—so it was only right that we get their thoughts on today’s most trending topics.
We asked a We asked a group of high schoolers—who are part of our sister brand SheKnows’ Teen Council—about a range of topics, and they were refreshingly candid and insightful. They’re obsessed with Pinterest, Snapchat is cool again, Nara Smith is the moment and TikTok can be … questionable. While the girlies are here for the DIY hacks, makeup tutorials, endless supply of recipes, and snack recommendations (like the Chamoy Pickles), they’re a bit “confused” by TikTok Shop. The teens told us they’d “never” buy anything on the platform because it feels like a “scam.” TikTok Shop was launched in the U.S. in September of last year and allows brands, creators, and merchants to sell products directly to TikTok users—usually for a fraction of what the item retails for outside of the platform.
While many have taken advantage of the convenient new service, the teens we caught up with feel it only promotes micro trends and the expectation that everything should be “fast.”
The high schoolers also shared their thoughts on dupes. Earlier this year, TikTok was flooded with videos on the subject, sharing dupes (cheaper/alternative versions) for Loewe sunglasses, Bottega Veneta shoes, and Skims pajamas. According to the teens, however, only certain dupes are acceptable: jewelry.
Another interesting take away from our conversation was the girls’ interest in non-popularized/or non celebrity beauty products—especially amid a time where it seems people are only using Rhode, Fenty, and Rare Beauty (nothing is wrong with that, by the way). Instead, they’re into Bobbi Brown, Farmacy, and Half Magic. So, clearly, the message here is: individualism is in.
