The 2025 Met Gala was last night and the stars pulled out their best looks. But, in the sea of extravagant outfits—we noticed a single hairstyle dominating the blue carpet. In honor of this year’s theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and celebrating 18th century Black dandyism, guests like Coco Jones and Dua Lipa payed homage to 1900s beauty with gelled swoops and finger waves.

The dress code at this year’s festivities was “Tailored For You,” which emphasized suiting and impeccable tailoring. Although internet fashion fans wasted no time picking apart outfits that seemingly didn’t follow the theme—a lot of stars also relied on their beauty looks to tell the story. And in an interesting turn of events, multiple hairstylists landed on a super similar hair look. The defining hairstyle consisted of swoops or curls gelled to the forehead.

For Sydney Sweeney’s look in particular, her hairstylist Glen Oropeza drew inspiration from vintage finger waves, while also attempting to modernize the hairstyle. “This look was inspired by the finger wave and wanting to take it into 2025. I knew I wanted a clean simple bun but also wanted to elevate it with an aspect of design in the front. I went with what I call a ‘finger swirl’ for an element of interest around the face,” he said.

Among the many waved and gelled hairstyles, Simone Biles and Bad Bunny also championed the look. While Simone’s flipped lob relied on a larger curl on one side and two more defined curls on the other side, Bad Bunny’s masculine version included one small gelled curl near his part. (Think, Zayn Malik’s single face-framing piece.) While it’s not uncommon for a single beauty trend to overtake the gala, we can’t say we expected everyone to arrive with the same hairstyle.
